Identity Verification Requirements

A new identity verification system will apply to individuals who form, manage or control UK companies, as well as those who file information. Verification can be completed directly with Companies House or through an ACSP.

Identity verification will be required for:

  • Company directors

  • Company secretaries

  • People with Significant Control (PSCs)

  • LLP members

  • General partners of limited partnerships

  • Anyone who files documents at Companies House for themselves or on behalf of others

The aim is to improve transparency, reduce fraudulent appointments, and increase the accuracy of information on the public register.

How the verification process works

An individual must provide:

  • A primary identity document (e.g., passport or driving licence)

  • A real-time photograph of their face

Using likeness-matching technology, Companies House or the ACSP will compare the images electronically. Successful verification usually takes a few minutes.

In most cases, identity verification is one-off, but re-verification may be required if:

  • A person changes their name

  • There are suspicions of fraud or misuse

  • Companies House identifies a discrepancy

ACSPs must retain verification records and submit a confirmation statement to Companies House demonstrating the check meets the required standard.
