Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about identity verification, ACSPs, and Companies House requirements.

What is identity verification and why is it required?

Identity verification is the process of confirming a person’s legal identity using official documents such as a passport, driving licence, or national ID. It is required by UK law (Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023) to prevent fraud, ensure transparency in company ownership, and protect the integrity of Companies House records.

Who must complete identity verification?

All company directors, persons with significant control (PSCs), company secretaries, authorised corporate service providers (ACSPs), and overseas individuals involved with UK companies must complete verification before they can legally act on behalf of a company.

How can I verify my identity?

There are two main ways to verify your identity:

  1. Directly via Companies House – online verification using your passport, driving licence, or national ID, with a facial recognition check.
  2. Through an ACSP (Authorised Corporate Service Provider) – provide documents and proof of address to a registered professional who submits your verified status on your behalf

What happens if I do not verify my identity?

If you fail to verify, you will be unable to act as a director or PSC, your company filings may be rejected, and Companies House may issue compliance notices or even begin strike-off proceedings. Verification is mandatory under UK law, and access is restored only after completing the process.
