Why you Need to verify your Identity

Identity verification is now a legal requirement under the UK’s strengthened Companies House rules. The process is designed to prevent the misuse of companies for illegal or fraudulent activities by ensuring that every individual connected to a UK company is who they claim to be.

By completing identity verification, you help to:

  • Reduce the risk of fraud and corporate abuse
  • Increase transparency and trust in the Companies House register
  • Improve the accuracy and reliability of company information available to the public

Identity verification is an essential step in enhancing corporate accountability and protecting the integrity of the UK business environment.

Who needs to verify their identity

You must complete identity verification if you are:

  • a company director
  • the equivalent of a director – this includes members, general partners and managing officers
  • a director of an overseas company registered in the UK
  • a person with significant control (PSC)
  • a company secretary
  • an agent or Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
  • an overseas individual connected to a UK company

Everyone must verify before they can form, manage, or update company information.

In most cases, you’ll only need to verify your identity once. You must not verify again unless we tell you to.

Legal Basis for Verification

Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, Companies House must ensure that every registered person has a verified identity.

This reform improves transparency, prevents misuse, and strengthens trust in the UK business ecosystem.

How the Verification Process Works

Steps:

  1. Receive your personal verification code
  2. Submit your ID (passport or driving licence)
  3. Complete facial recognition check
  4. ACSP or Companies House validates your information
  5. Confirmation email and verified status
